Wide-eyed with wonder, endless energy to take risks to achieve and a constant enthusiasm is how I’d describe my students in Grade Five !With so much enthusiasm and energy around how could a teacher help but become ignited by the enthusiasm that surrounds her? Through my instruction and motivation of students, I have a number of aims to prepare them for the future. I aim to instill in them the importance of being flexible life- long learners who keep up with the developments of society. I expose them to learning situations in preparation for them to become critical thinkers who can analyze situations in logical ways to help them make the best decisions possible. I encourage students to be responsible risk takers who dare to speak their mind diplomatically so goodness wins over evil. Through all the technology exposure we provide students with, we know they’ll be highly technology-literate. This will be an essential skill which will allow them to stand tall as global citizens. Above all, I aim to instill in my students the responsibility to be caring citizens who will protect and take care of our world for future generations!

I’m Ms. Heather Kingham, an elementary teacher who has taught at RIS for 15 years. I grew up in Myanmar where I first began my teaching career. I taught at the International School in Yangon for 5 years and became acquainted with the American curriculum. During my vacation time while attending university, I was asked to help teach English to students at my village school in the Shan States. It was at this school that I began my first schooling as a child and it was also at this same school that I realized how rewarding it can be to teach and how blissful it can be to interact with students.

I majored in English at the Rangoon Arts and Science University in Yangon to earn my BA. While working at RIS, I was encouraged by Mrs. Thavida – our head mistress and our school director – Father Griffith to obtain a Masters Degree in Education. Thanks to their support and encouragement, I did obtain my MA at Michigan State University.

Being a teacher and keeping up with the latest trends in teaching can be quite a challenge Still there is nothing I like to do better than to teach. There never is a dull moment as a teacher as each batch of students is so diverse. I am thoroughly enjoying my career as a teacher as the students at RIS never fail to reach up to our expectations of them and oftentimes they even go beyond! Students past and present, I couldn’t be prouder of you all!
