Prerequisite: Meets the entrance criteria for placement
into the High School ESL program at the intermediate level
Duration: One year. Class meets two periods every
school day
Credit: One English credit (0.5 academic elective
credit; 0.5 values credit)
The ESL intermediate class prepares students for mainstream
classes by assisting the students in using English on a regular
basis both socially and academically in the school setting.
This course prepares the students to enter the ESL advanced
class.
Intermediate students learn the English language skills
of reading comprehension, writing, speaking, and listening
while acquiring academic knowledge in the content areas
of mainstream English and social science. The intermediate
course includes the study of literature, both Asian and
Western, in English from which high-interest topics are
generated. The literature provides a gateway through which
students can examine world cultures.
Social science concepts and vocabulary are taught through
projects and research which are the extensions of the literature
studies. Additionally, writing, grammar, general English
vocabulary, and listening and speaking skills are developed
through extended activities based on the study of literature
and social science. Grammar and usage skills are reinforced
through student writing.
Oral skills are enhanced through the reading of fiction
and poetry, skits and other forms of role playing, and the
presentation of class projects. Literature is also examined
through in-class discussions.
Direct skills-based instruction relying on textbook materials
covering grammar, usage, and sentence structure will be
taught and integrated with the literature and student writing.
Students literal comprehension skills will be developed
and monitored.
Study skills will be taught through the course for the
entire year and will be integrated into the curriculum.
