Standards for ESL:
High School
(Outcomes and Assessment)
Students undertaking English as a Second Language courses will be able to:

1. Transfer oral language to written language.

2. Use phonetic and contextual clues to expand vocabulary.
3. Discuss material read in a way that demonstrates comprehension of the material.

4. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose of the library and the use of reference material.

5. Use critical thinking skills in literature study.

6. Demonstrate an appreciation for reading.
7. Demonstrate ability to use oral skills.
8. Use technology as a tool for learning.
9. Use punctuation and capitalization correctly.
10. Write with a sense of purpose.
11. Use the writing process to produce comprehensible writing.
12. Demonstrate ability to use reading and writing functionally.

13. Demonstrate ability to read and interpret content area materials.

14. Demonstrate good study skills.
Assessment Profile
To measure progress in achieving the ESL outcomes, a profile of assessment items will be collected. It will consist of the following items:
1. Objective Tests - multiple choice
- matching, identification
2. Written Assignments - text based
- essays
- creative writing
3. Oral Work - individual or group presentations
- role plays / simulations
- group discussions
4. Responses to Literature - book reports
- responding in another medium
- response journal
5. Portfolios (a collection of student work over time) - student and teacher assessment instruments used
