Philosophy 
1. Modern or foreign languages are essential part of life today. It is our responsibility to offer RIS student opportunities to learn or get acquainted with as many foreign languages as possible, developing particular abilities of listening, reading, writing and speaking.

2. RIS students live in an international community where different languages are spoken and different cultures are practiced. It is our responsibility to guarantee a high quality process of learning modern/foreign languages, understanding and accepting differences in cultural practices.

3. RIS students are instrumental members of their international communities. It is our responsibility to exercise our leadership, ownership and empowerment to guarantee awareness, acceptance and blending within different cultures in the process of learning modern/foreign languages.

4. Knowledge, information, and technology are essential part of our lives. It is our responsibility as teachers to keep pace with times to guarantee a competent performance in our job. Information has to be delivered with accuracy. Knowledge is to be delivered with integrity. Technology must to be used with ethics.

This is a course for beginners. Instruction focuses on interactive communication in everyday situations. Notions of French history, geography and culture are introduced to develop understanding and appreciation for different cultures.

This course continues from French 1. Emphasis is placed on understanding and using the language through mastery of its structure. Instruction evolves around an everyday situation theme. Understanding the French culture is essential part of this level.

Prerequisite : French 2 and teacher approval

At this level, students meet more complex forms of the language. They are also encouraged to communicate in the target language and produce original oral and written work. The culture of the target language is an integral part of the material for each instructional unit.

Duration : Full year, class meets every other day.

Prerequisite : French 3 and teacher approval

The emphasis in this course is on encouraging spontaneous expression through extensive oral and written practice via authentic documents (newspapers, magazines, advertisements) and literature. Extended discussion and personal reactions or opinions serve to increase correctness of expression. As much current cultural material as possible is integrated into the course to reinforce student proficiency and to help prepare for achievement and proficiency tests as required by some colleges

IB French Standard Level, year 1 and IB French Higher Level, year 2
Duration : Full year, class meets every other day.
Credit : 2 (1 per year)
Prerequisite : French 3 and teacher approval

This program is designed to prepare the students to take the IB French B Examination, Advanced Placement Test and the Thai University Entrance Examination for modern languages. These courses focus on the practical application of the language, following the IB syllabus which is based on themes of leisure, changes and groups. Authentic materials are used to integrate the language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. back to top

AP French Language
Duration : Full year, class meets every other day
Credit : 1
Prerequisite : French 4 or equivalent

Advanced Placement French Language emphasizes the use of language for active communication. Students will hone their ability to comprehend formal and informal conversation and to express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency; acquire the vocabulary and grasp of structure necessary for easy, accurate reading of newspapers, magazines, and modern literary works; and strengthen their ability to compose expository passages. back to top

IB Spanish, Ab Initio
Duration : 2 years, class meets every other day
Credit : 1.0 per year

Ab Initio Spanish provides an opportunity for students to study the language at a beginning level for two years at IB Standard Level. Students should have no previous experience with the language. The Ab Initio course focuses on spoken interaction, using a whole range of Spanish resources and texts as a stimulus for discussion. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are all developed. There is plenty of opportunity for students to learn more about Spanish cultures within this course.

Duration : Full year, class meets every other day.
Credit : 1
Prerequisite:
Spanish 1 or Ab Initio Year 1 and teacher approval.

This course continues from Spanish 1. Emphasis is placed on understanding and using the language through mastery of its structure. Instruction evolves around an everyday situation and themes. Understanding the Spanish culture is a key focus at this level. The exam is worth 80% of the course grade.

IB Spanish Standard Level, year 2 and IB Spanish Higher Level, Year 2
Duration : Full year, class meets every other day.
Credit : 1
Prerequisite :
IB Spanish SL or HL Year 1 and teacher approval.

This course is designed to prepare the students to take outside examinations such as IB Language B, Advanced Placement Test, the Thai University Entrance Examination for modern languages. Grammar is reviewed and emphasis is placed on oral-aural and written communication. The exam is worth 80% of the final IB grade. We do not offer the AP Spanish class, but it is possible to do the AP Spanish exam. If you want to do the AP exam, please speak to your Spanish teacher.

Ab Initio Mandarin provides an opportunity for students to study the language at a beginning level for two years at IB Standard Level. Students should have no previous experience with the language. The Ab Initio course focuses on spoken interaction, using a whole range of Spanish resources and texts as a stimulus for discussion. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are all developed with special attention to 150 basic written characters. There is plenty of opportunity for students to learn more about Chinese culture within this course.

Prerequisite : Native Mandarin speaker with good listening comprehension and speaking ability, instructor approval

This course is designed for native speakers of Mandarin who wish to maintain and further develop proficiency in their native language. Instruction focuses on a foundation of writing basic Chinese characters
centered on daily life and the use of homonyms, homographs, and frequently confused words. Students develop language skills while focusing on topics of Chinese festival and culture.

This course continues to develop the language skills from Mandarin N1. It emphasizes writing more difficult characters and continues to develop homonyms, homographs, and frequently confused words found in everyday life. Students learn more about topics of Chinese culture.

Duration : Full year, class meets every other day

Prerequisite : Mandarin N2 and instructor approval

This course continues to develop the language skills from Mandarin N1 and 2. Instruction stresses Chinese composition. Students learn to write complete sentences and simple compositions using homonyms, homographs, frequently confused words, idioms, and proverbs. Varied topics of Chinese culture continue as a focus of student learning.

Prerequisite : Mandarin N3 and teacher approval

This course is designed to continue the learning from Mandarin N3. The instructional focus continues on composition writing. Students learn how to write better compositions further developing the vocabulary and writing skills of Mandarin N3. Improvement of listening, reading and written communication in Mandarin is continued based on topics of Chinese culture.

This is a course for non-Thai speakers or Thai speakers who possess limited knowledge of the Thai language. Students will learn basic conversation and knowledge of the Thai writing system. The study of Thai culture will be integrated into the course to expand students' understanding of Thailand as well as to open opportunities for further study in this field.

This is a course for students who can comprehend the oral language but possess limited reading and writing skills. All four skills are integrated into the curriculum. Basic reading and writing are developed for a solid foundation in the language.

Thai Literacy 3
Duration : One semester, class meets every other day
Credit : 0.5

This is a course for students who know all Thai consonants, vowels, tones, how to combine consonants of different classes with different tones. Reading and writing will include more complex words such those with mute consonant sign, irregular spelling words etc. All four skills are integrated into the curriculum. Thai myths and fairy tales are included in the curriculum.

Students will learn principles of Thai language in depth so as to apply this piece of knowledge to effective communication. More focus will be on Thai culture and general knowledge about Thailand together with an orientation to Thai literature. Accuracy will be developed along with fluency. All four skills are integrated into the curriculum. Outside reading books are required.

This course fosters the skills developed in Thai 9 in preparation for IB and the last two years of high school. Aiming to develop a higher level of communication in Thai, students will develop their skills through reading, writing, and orally-interpreted activities. Students will also study literary genres such as poetry, non-fiction, drama, epic, and novel, as well as aspects of Thai culture.

The focus of this course is Thai classical literature as well as contemporary fiction and play scripts. Students will read and analyze different types of novels and play scripts. Activities include reading and interpreting novels and play scripts as well as presenting them dramatically through oral interpretations and play productions.

Credit : 1.0 per year

This is an academically challenging course designed to prepare students for the IB examination. This is an intensive study of 11 pieces of literature chosen from the IB Prescribed World Literature List. Students will develop the ability to draw links in literature as well as develop an appreciation for the literature studied.
