 Why Study Theatre Arts?:
Don't think that Theatre Arts are only for people who would like to make a career out of acting. They offer many more skills than that, the most obvious benefit of course is the increased confidence in self-expression which will be of great help in all kinds of oral presentations and speeches, debates and when you have to go for a job interview.

Even if you're planning a job in business, marketing, or advertising, Theatre Arts can improve your chances of success by strengthening your communication and persuasive skills.

Taking an elective in this department is also a lot of fun. Everyone talks about the wonderful family feeling of belonging to a Drama group, the level of trust and sharing quite unlike any other subject. Students at the end of a semester are often sad that the group will be breaking up, it's enabled them to form so many friendships (especially with people from other grade/year levels).

5. For mime: body control and physical co-ordination

Even if you've done some martial arts (like Kung Fu or Tae Kwon Do or Muay Thai) or Tai Chi; you'll be able to participate in this class. There are interesting ways we could turn these forms into dance.

1. Physical control, increasing expressive abilities of all parts of the body.
2. We'll design and perform our own dances in a wide variety of styles, depending on class preferences.
3. Some of the basics of choreography - how to give shape and style to various dance movements
4. Study some aspects of the history of dance - folk tradition, different cultural forms,
dance in the movies, Broadway musicals, rock video clips eg. MTV.
5. Exploring new types of musical accompaniment to suit our dance styles.
6. Opportunities for performance, although this will not be compulsory .

Drama
Duration : One semester, class meets every other day
Offered : Semester 1 and 2
Credit : 0.5

Drama is about learning real-life skills, not just acting skills. It gives us first-hand experience of a special kind, unlike any other learning situation you've had before. We use our imaginations to become different people from a wide variety of situations - rich and poor, powerful and weak, past, present and even into the science fiction future. We learn how to improve our voice and body control. We make up our own stories using improvisation techniques and prepare small productions for different audiences in our Mini- Theatre - always something the students really enjoy.

Advanced Drama
Duration : One semester, class meets every other day
Offered : Semester 1 and 2
Credit : 0.5

To do this course, you definitely need previous experience in Drama, either at RIS or at some other institution. All aspects of theatre will be covered in greater depth and you will be expected to perform before several types of audience (mainly RIS students from other classes/subject areas). The specific direction this class takes in any one semester will depend on the interests and skill levels of the students involved; so there's lots of chance to let your individuality shine - even singing and dancing, if you feel up to it!
There will be chances to record our work on video - some of our previous material made it onto Thai TV here in Bangkok!
