The Social Sciences Department of Ruamrudee International
School is keeping pace with the "expected school wide learning
results" (ESLRs). The courses are focused on developing
socially-responsible global citizens with good English speaking,
reading and writing and analytic thinking skills. The department
believes in and values human dignity and promotes tolerance
and understanding of the many different cultures that make up
the school population.
The Social Sciences Department is committed to educational excellence.
Particular emphasis is placed on research skills and on critical
analysis of primary and secondary material. The courses are
both academically challenging and relevant. Students are encouraged
to appreciate the rich heritage of human individuals and societies.
The Social Sciences Department believes that careful planning,
varied instruction and practical assessment to a specified standard
are major components of a student centered curriculum. We think
that students should be challenged to pursue personal excellence
in order to build a better future for themselves and others.

Social Studies 9:
Modern World History
Duration : One semester, class meets

Offered : Semester 1 or 2 of Year 9
Credit : 1
Modern World History will focus on the major historical developments
of the 20th Century. Drawing on a range of primary and secondary
sources, you will learn how to identify questions of historical
interest, gather information and express judgments through your
writing and oral presentations. You will study topics that include
the Russian Revolution, the causes of World War II, the Great
Depression, Hitler's rise to power, the Middle East and the Cold
War. Through the study of these events you will gain an insight
into the lives of others and value the role played by history
in understanding the present through the past.

Human Geography

The aim of this course is to look at contemporary issues and
examine topics which are of concern to our society. These topics
include environmental issues and natural hazards, population,
urbanisation and development. Local, regional, national and international
case studies will be examined with special emphasis on Thailand
and Asia. Students will be required to undertake an overnight
field trip on the Chao Phraya River.

This course is an introduction to Thai history and culture and
is required of all students who are not citizens of Thailand.
Topics covered may include: Thai Kings and Kingdom, Modern Thailand,
Thailand in Transition and Thai Culture.

Do you want to know how businesses work? Maybe you want to run
your own business someday. If either statement describes you,
look at this course. You will need some theory to understand basic
economic principles. You will also need to know how your customers
think, and how to keep track of your business in Thailand. While
you are learning these basics, though, you?ll be setting up and
running your own mini business and practicing what you?re learning.
This is a hands-on course that will help you understand business
and how to operate a business in the real world.

This subject will provide you with a survey of US history from
English colonization through to the 1980s. Students will gain
an insight into American culture and become aware of historical

this century. This course is highly recommended for US citizens.

Psychology is a social science that seeks to understand how we
think, feel and act. You will study a range of topics including

this course you will gain a deeper understanding of yourself and
others.

This is an academically challenging course designed to prepare
students for the Advanced Placement Psychology Exam. You will
study all areas of interest to psychology including thinking,
states of consciousness, the biological basis of behavior, social
psychology, personality, abnormal psychology, motivation and emotions,
and developmental psychology. You are expected to master a great
deal of information and undertake psychological research and experiments.

Prerequisite : Current Social Studies teacher's signature
Candidates are required to study the biological, cognitive and
learning psychological perspectives, as well as one of the seven
optional studies. The study of Research Methodology is compulsory
(introduction to research methods, ethics, and quantitative research
methods). Candidates must complete an experimental study in the
form of the partial replication of and report on one simple experiment,
utilizing descriptive statistics. The exam is worth 80% of the
course grade.

Candidates are required to study the biological, cognitive, learning
and humanistic perspectives, as well as two of the seven optional

This is an academically challenging course designed to prepare
students for the Advanced Placement American History Exam. This
course will cover the period from the European Colonization of
America to the 1990s and will examine major developments from
a variety of perspectives. Special emphasis will be given to an
in-depth analysis of historical events, ideas and trends. You
are expected to master a large amount of historical information,
analyze historical sources, and write essays.

AP Microeconomics

Microeconomics is the study of how individual consumers and businesses
make decisions. This Advanced Placement course covers basic economic
foundations such as scarcity, opportunity costs, and allocation
of resources. The course covers microeconomic principles including
efficiency, demand and supply, prices and output, market structures,
market failure, government intervention, and resource markets.
We also read about the great economic thinkers of the past 200
years. Students are required to take the AP Microeconomics exam.

Macroeconomics is the study of national and international economics.
This Advanced Placement course covers how we calculate national
income and output, gross domestic product, aggregate demand and
aggregate supply, employment, inflation, money and banking, investment,
consumption, fiscal and monetary policies, interest rates, international
trade and finance, exchange rates, and current accounts. We continue
our readings of the great economic thinkers of the past 200 years.
Students are required to take the AP Macroeconomics exam.

This course will cover an in depth study of the principle systems
of democratic government used in the world today. Focus will be
on learning the differences between the Parliamentary System as
used in the United Kingdom, the Presidential System as used in
the United States and the Mixed System as used in France. Students
will also learn how these systems are actually applied in their
own countries as we discuss the Governmental Systems used in Thailand,
India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

The IB Standard Level course will focus on in-depth study of
a selection of 20th Century world history topics chosen from the
IB prescribed list. Topics may vary year-to-year depending on
the instructor but are likely to include - 1. Causes, Practices
and Effects of War, 2. Nationalism and Independence Movements,
Decolonization and Challenges Facing New States, 3. The Rise and
Rule of Single Party Sates, 4. The Cold War. Major attention will
be given to researching, analyzing and interpreting a variety
of historical documents, developing essay writing skills and mastering
the historical information necessary in sitting the IB History
exam. The exam is worth 75% of course grade.

The IB Higher Level course will study the same content and world
history topics as the Standard Level course. In addition, there
will be a Regional Focus component, which will cover selection
of countries and themes from within the chosen region. The exam
is worth 80% of course grade.

The course is designed to help you learn the principles, practices
and skills of business. It promotes the importance of technology
and focuses on human resource management, finance, marketing and
production. Case studies are the main teaching method because
in order to understand a case study, you must integrate and apply
your knowledge. Higher level covers six units of coursework, a
research project and an exam. The exam is worth 75% of course
grade.

Prerequisite : Current Social Sciences teacher's signature
The aim of this course is to enable students to develop a global
perspective, a sense of world interdependence, and to understand
the interrelationship between people, place and the environment.
Students will study the core themes of population, resources and
development and use geographical methodologies and techniques
relevant to geographical inquiry. Students will also study two
additional themes. Case studies are widely used. There will be
a required overnight fieldwork trip, two internally assessed research
papers and one externally assessed IB exam. Students must take
the IB exam in May 2004.

IB ITGS (Information Technology
in a Global Society) (Standard Level only)
Duration : 2 years, class meets every
other day
Credit : 1 per year
Prerequisite : Current Social Sciences teachers' signature
This is an academically and intellectually challenging course
that allows students to explore recent trends and developments
in the world of information technology. Its primary focus is an
analysis of the effects that these technologies are having on
our world and the ethical considerations which go along with them.
It is designed to help students understand the consequences of
the use and development of information technology. While a large
component of the class is spent on computers, it is NOT a class
designed to teach programming or how to use a computer; it is
an exploration of various technologies, what they do, the effects
they have on the world, and how they should be used responsibly.
No previous computer knowledge is necessary, but it is a definite
asset. Only juniors can join the "Year 1" of this class.
The final exam is worth 50% of the IB final grade.
