Community Service |
Objectives:
The Community Service component of the RIS Values curriculum aims
to:
- Make students aware of the needs of the community.
- Provide students opportunities for involvement with the needy.
- Increase awareness of the reality, replacing misinformation,
prejudicial ignorance about the less fortunate with accurate
and reliable information.
- Support the work of various Community Service organizations
in their attempt to ease the suffering of people who are in
need.
- Respect, see, and acknowledge the real person in need rather
than their sufferings.
- Practice love, compassion, humility, and understanding.
Preparations:
- Students should be well informed of the place(es)where they
will be doing their Community Service. Utilize class lectures,
discussions, video presentations, guest speakers etc..
- Always pair students with a Thai speaker.
- Prepare a list of possible questions appropriate to the situation.
- Get student volunteers to be the leader of the group, and
brainstorm a range of activities applicable to the place.
- Prepare a debriefing and follow-up community service activity
after the visit.
- Evaluate the trip and discuss pertinent feedback.
- Document the trip by taking photos of what’s going on.
