Music is a form of expression and communication. It can help us
feel deeply, make connections and learn about other people and
things in the world, comment on our experiences as well as reflect
and make meaning of ourlives. With music we can create and appreciate
art, not just sound or noise. Music has it's own language and
alphabet, styles, interpretations, simple parts and complexities.
Using these tools can help us understand and contribute not only
to the world of music but other subjects and areas of life as
well. Music has a role in every society and we can study and make
connections to science, math, social studies, language arts, PE,
health, and other types of art. Waves and vibrations, pulse, numbers,
patterns writing and poetry, exercize, breathing, rest, eating,
dance, and other visual art forms are just some of the areas with
which music can interact. Students can build base level and higher
order thinking skills. So too can they build imaginations and
create new ways of looking at (or hearing) our world. These are
reasons why we studying music and making it are important.
