RIS Technology Professional Development Plan: 2002-2003

overview

Supporting the ESLRs and the Technology Standards.

The staff development opportunities provided by the Technology Committee are intended to empower teachers and staff with both skills and ideas to use the school’s various technologies in ways that support the school’s six ESLRs and technology standards to develop student growth and learning. Discussions are held with teachers individually and in groups about how these can be applied to everyday classroom situations. Much of the committee’s work is aimed at developing units, lessons and activities using various strategies to incorporate the ESLRs and technology standards.

Meeting needs

Staff development opportunities focus on four areas of concentration, while providing four different levels and types of workshops and other opportunities. Needs analyses, which include interviews, surveys, portfolios and observations are used to help determine the technology staff development opportunities that are offered. Work and coordinated planning with the school’s curriculum coordinators, department heads and principals is on-going. Most opportunities are prepared by in-house experts; outside experts are used sometimes to teach specialized skills to members of the technology committee and other interested people.

Scheduling

Workshops and related sessions will be offered on inservice days, after school, on weekends, and during school, depending on the type of offering and the amount of interest. All attempts will be made to offer a variety of offerings with a variety of scheduling options.

Credit

Teachers may wish to concentrate in one area during the year and work towards achieving up to three credits in one area. Alternatively, they may take a variety of courses in all areas of concentration. When teachers have attended a total of 15 hours of non-credit specific workshops or opportunities, they are entitled receive one RIS credit. Hours attended at workshops will be cumulative for up to three years.

Professional Portfolios

The technology committee feels that it is important that all teachers maintain a technology portfolio that highlights both their abilities to use various technologies and the work that they do during the year. There are many ways of doing this, and we will be teaching some of these. Teachers who have innovative ways of maintaining technology portfolios are encouraged to share their ideas with the technology committee.

Sharing

Teachers are encourage to share ideas and experiences with other teaches and members of the technology committee. Opportunities for teaching workshops are open to all members of the school faculty, administration and staff. Anyone interested in teaching or sharing technology related information should contact a member of the technology committee.
