Dear RIS Community,
Community service is an integral part of the school mission and culture at Ruamrudee International School. To mark its 50th anniversary, in 2004 RIS sought ways to expand its outreach program into a wider community.
The Prison Learning Center project, supported by RIS, was officially launched by the Thai Minister of Justice on December 22, 2004. The project was co-sponsored by the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres, who along with RIS donated learning resources and created access to continuing education for the inmates of 54 correctional institutes nationwide. The Corrections Department allocated space inside prison grounds to build a facility able to accommodate 20-40 prisoners at a time. Each center is equipped with computers, resources and materials for language learning and vocational studies, and books on a wide range of topics. The center is organized into a library, a computer corner, and an area for classes and workshops.
In 2008, twenty-six Prison Learning Centers opened in Chiang Mai, Nan and Nongkhai, and Bangkok. To date 50 Learning Centers have been constructed to serve inmates who will be renewed by the spark of education and assure them of a better tomorrow.
RIS is proud to be part of services that benefit people from all walks of life, and instill the value of caring citizenship. Community service will always be a core element of the school’s philosophy that emphasizes academic excellence and caring. I am happy to inform you that English classes for the inmates in Minburi will resume once again. Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday, beginning September 27-December 20, 2011. Please join us in this worthy cause.
