Dr. Derrick Gay Returns to Strengthen Intercultural Competency Across the Community
On January 26–27, 2026, RIS Ruamrudee International School welcomed Dr. Derrick Gay back to campus for a second consecutive year, continuing the school’s strategic commitment to intercultural competency and cultivating a culture of belonging.
Over two days of engagement, Dr. Gay worked with faculty, staff, students, and parents—reinforcing a shared understanding that academic excellence alone is not enough to ensure long-term success in global environments.
A School-Wide Commitment
The visit began with a full-day professional learning experience for faculty and staff during the January 26 inservice. Building on last year’s foundation of shared language around dignity, respect, and belonging, this year’s sessions focused on practical application. Educators explored real-life case studies and strategies for navigating cultural differences with empathy, clarity, and confidence.
Dr. Gay’s facilitation fostered thoughtful dialogue and authentic reflection, challenging participants to consider how everyday interactions shape student experience.

On the morning of January 27, parents gathered at The Nest for a workshop titled “Beyond Academics: Why Intercultural Competency Determines Student Success Abroad.”
The session highlighted a reality many international school families encounter: students may arrive at university academically strong yet culturally unprepared. Through practical frameworks and research-based insights, parents explored how to intentionally support their children’s adaptability, communication skills, and confidence in global environments.
An Ongoing Strategic Focus
Intercultural competency at RIS is not a single initiative or annual event. It is embedded within the school’s broader mission to nurture intellectual growth, moral character, and global citizenship.
