Language is central to learning. Through language, students become inquiring, knowledgeable individuals, effective communicators, and reflective thinkers. At RIS, we recognize that many of our students are learning in a language other than their first language. In our international school community, English serves as the common language of communication, fostering inclusion both inside and outside the classroom among students and faculty from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
Using a language that everyone understands helps build a welcoming, globally minded community while enabling students to develop the academic English proficiency needed for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
All members of the RIS community—including students, faculty, staff, and administrators—are expected to use English as the primary language of communication on campus for both academic and social interaction. English should be used throughout the school day and across campus, except where another language is appropriate for instructional purposes, academic support, or official school business.
To support this expectation, students and parents are asked to observe the following guidelines:
Students are expected to:
- use English throughout the school day, except during Thai and other foreign language classes.
- use English as the primary language of social interaction so that everyone in the school community can participate and feel included.
- actively develop their English communication skills in preparation for future academic success and post-secondary education.
- represent themselves and RIS positively by supporting the school’s commitment to an English-speaking learning environment.
Parents are expected to:
- encourage their children to use English while on campus.
- reinforce the importance of practicing English at school while continuing to value, support, and develop their child’s home language.
- support the implementation of the RIS English Language Policy in partnership with teachers and administrators.
- use English, to the extent possible, while on campus to promote an inclusive school environment.
