Our high school offers a three-week summer program that gives RIS students opportunities to achieve the greatest academic success in their final years at RIS. Courses are offered across the HS curriculum. This allows students the luxury of selecting classes that best support their educational goals for the summer and the school year to come. Students may also choose a required elective course, such as PE or Art, during the summer to free up a credit hour during the upcoming school year for an even more rigorous class schedule. Other courses are designed to further strengthen a student’s established skills and guide them to the next level of understanding. Likewise, specific courses have been chosen to further the enrichment and acceleration of their prior learning.

For ELD students entering grades 9–12
Through the genre of science fiction movies, this course will develop students’ English language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Topics explored will include colonization of other worlds, evolution of the human species, and infertility. Students will discuss movie clips, evaluate the credibility of scientific phenomena seen on film, and create authentic spoken/written texts in which they have to consider purpose and audience. Students will also learn grammar and vocabulary in context.

Reinforcement and Enrichment (Afternoon)

Students entering 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades will read, discuss, write about, and report on short literary works. Course readings will be in the genres of shorter fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and the graphic novel. This course will improve students’ skills in critical reading, writing, and thinking, which they will use throughout their academic careers. The mixed levels will give all students the opportunity to develop and polish their command of these fundamental skills in the supportive environment of a summer class.

This is a student-centered introduction to the SAT. Based on their individual strengths and weaknesses, students will prepare a three-week personalized SAT study plan. Students will select skill areas to focus on, make decisions on how to learn, and negotiate assessment methods. As part of a learning community, students will use peer-to-peer interactions to enhance their learning. The emphasis is on making sure the students’ learning efforts translate into maximum performance gains on the SAT.

Experimental Design for Science (Morning and Afternoon)

The distinguishing feature of science is its dependency on experimentation. In this course, students will learn how to design and perform experiments safely, write a report based on the expectations of the RIS Science Department, and analyze data to draw valid conclusions and predictions. The focus of the lessons will be students performing various experiments, mainly of a physical science nature.

Economics Exam Preparation (Morning)

This course is designed to assist current and future students of economics in evaluating the myriad of ways that the study of economics applies to real-world scenarios. We will examine in-depth case studies that bring together economic theory, public policy, and consumer behavior in order to develop a richer understanding of how these domains interact with each other. The ultimate goal is to provide students with rich, in-depth information that will help them in their exams for both IB and AP economics classes.

History of Rock and Roll and Beyond (Afternoon)

This course will be a combination of learning the history of the genre and students producing their own songs. We will examine the cultural and political context out of which Rock and Roll was born. The course will also follow the evolution of this art form into the endless genres of popular music that have such a profound influence on us today. Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry, Elvis, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, The Clash, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Nirvana, and even BTS will make appearances in this class. Students will use their understanding of the rhythmic and lyrical structures of Rock and Roll to create their own songs.

Beginning Guitar (Morning and Afternoon)

This course is for students who want to learn to play guitar or further their ability on guitar. Students will learn common strumming patterns and how to play chords and scales (major and blues) and pop songs on the guitar. Students will learn basic music theory in order to create melodies and write their own songs. They will learn how musicians communicate through song and how culture affects song. Students are advised to have a guitar at home for practice. They will also have the opportunity to write their own song(s), as well as prepare for a group performance as the course will culminate with a guitar concert.

SAT Math (Morning)

For students entering grades 10–12
This course stresses the fundamentals of mathematics that are tested on the SAT as well as the critical-thinking skills necessary to score well on these tests. After reviewing the basics, students will focus on the wording and main concepts that recur most frequently. Each student will work with several sections from the most recent SATs given. The instructor will provide guided practice in using a calculator to arrive at the correct answers and will help students become familiar with student-generated response-type questions. Students will practice actual SAT tests and review their individual components. Weekly assessments will be provided for each student.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Fitness Training (Morning and Afternoon)

Using the same SHAPE standards as the PE program throughout the regular school year, this course will focus on improving or maintaining fitness with an emphasis on health-related components of fitness. Activities will include resistance training, circuit training, yoga, Pilates, fitness walking/ running, kickboxing, Zumba, Crossfit, aerobics, plyometrics, and other exercises that increase the heart rate to improve personal fitness levels. Students will take pre-, during, and post- fitness tests, continually setting goals for improvement. They will learn to design and implement a fitness plan and understand the correlation between intensity and results.

Latin Dance (Afternoon)

This course is designed to teach students the basic elements of Salsa and Bachata Latin Dance. Students will analyze the role of dance in improving and maintaining one’s health-related fitness and then incorporate dance activities into their personal fitness program/plan. Students will learn the basic steps of these dances as well as complex combinations. Students will learn the historical and geographical roots of these dances, the music, and the instruments associated with each one. This course will help students learn the skills of dance while improving their technique, poise, self-confidence, and creative ability as well as deepening their understanding of and appreciation for the rich and colorful heritage that each dance represents.
VISUAL ARTS
Art (Morning and Afternoon)

Students will learn and apply the elements and principles of art to produce artwork that reflects their understanding of these concepts. Students will then explore and experiment with various techniques and media. As part of the course, students will learn critical-analysis skills and will need to use a web-based platform to reflect on their process and product. This course fulfils the Art 1 requirement; students should therefore not take regular school Art 1.
TECHNOLOGY
VEX Robotics (Afternoon)

For students entering grades 9–12
Students will be tasked with designing and building a robot in teams to play against other students in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills of teamwork, leadership, communication, and more. Students who take this summer school course can go on to join the RIS Robotics Team during the school year and take part in national competitions. No previous robotics experience is needed, and students of all abilities are welcome to join this not-to-be-missed summer school opportunity that is available this year. Assessment is based on several practical skills-based tasks as well as an engineering notebook and journal.

Let’s Build You a Tribe! (Morning)

This is an exciting new course that will encourage students to produce and expand their online presence. Students will explore different computing platforms and use them to build their personal online community. They will also learn about appropriate and safe uses of technology, as well as micro blogging/vlogging. In addition, there is a timely focus in teaching students how to allocate their time between their online and offline worlds.

Audio/Visual Design, Production, and Publishing (Morning)

For students entering grades 9–12
Students will be able to take advantage of our new Audio Visual classrooms and resources to improve their productions for their YouTube channels and other social media outlets. In three weeks, they will learn all of the necessary skills to impress a YouTube Channel audience. In this course, students will explore their own interests and learn how to plan for, design, and develop creative audio/visual products that can be shared on their social media platforms. At the end of the summer session, students will have a variety of creations that showcase their newly acquired skills. These skills are easily transferable to other content areas and projects they will work on in their future studies. Ultimately, students will learn the skills that will set their university resume apart from other students from around the world.

This Thai Creative Writing course is designed for students to create original forms of descriptive writing, poetry, short stories, and journals. The course will explore vocabulary development and creative writing techniques and skills. Students will learn to become better readers, writers, and thinkers. Students’ writing will be presented orally and in written form. Computers and word processing are used for composition.
CULINARY ARTS
Heavenly Baked Goods (Morning)

For students entering grades 9–12
Students: Do you feel like food prepared in an oven tastes better than food prepared on the stove or that the best desserts have to rest a little bit in the high heat of the oven before they touch your taste buds? If so, you should keep reading. This summer school course is designed to get students comfortable with using an oven. During the three weeks of intensively using an oven, students will learn how to prepare delicious baked meals and, of course, they will get to eat the food they cook! Let them discover their new hobby!
