About the Workshop
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework rooted in neuroscience and the science of learning. It guides the intentional design of flexible, accessible methods, materials, and environments that anticipate learner variability, minimize barriers, and nurture agency.
Grounded in an understanding of how the brain learns, UDL invites educators to design for the full range of learners from the start—honoring diversity as the norm rather than the exception.
Over the course of two interactive days, participants will explore practical strategies and tools they can apply immediately to create more inclusive, engaging, and empowering learning experiences.

Participants Will:
Examine how architectural concepts have inspired universal design in education.
Understand the connections between cognitive science and Universal Design for Learning.
Consider three design filters—options, agency, and accessibility—that support learner agency.
Engage in a design process to refine goals, anticipate barriers, and remove them in support of all students using CAST’s UDL Guidelines.
Become familiar with CAST’s Schoolwide Implementation Criteria and their implications for leadership and systemwide design. Participants in administrative or leadership roles will also have opportunities to consider schoolwide application and systems-level design.
Participants will leave with practical strategies and tools they can apply immediately to design more inclusive, engaging, and empowering learning experiences.

Meet the Presenters
Kim Bane
Kim Bane is an international education consultant who, together with her colleagues at Pathways to Inclusive Education, works with schools worldwide to design and implement inclusive educational practices that support the needs of all learners.
Kim brings extensive experience, dedication, and passion to this work. She has successfully collaborated with schools throughout the United States, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia to transform learning experiences for students, teachers, and school leaders.
Pathways to Inclusive Education supports schools in creating and sustaining inclusive cultures by helping them think strategically about their journey and design a course of action to accomplish their goals. Through coaching and consulting, Kim supports school leaders as they navigate complex organizational change. She also works directly with teachers as they develop their understanding of the critical instructional components and approaches that support inclusive practices, including Universal Design for Learning, the Co-Instructional Cycle—or co-teaching—and tiered systems of support, often referred to as MTSS, that address the needs of the whole child.
Jason Hicks
Drawing on his experience as a social studies teacher, administrator, coach, and consultant, Jason Hicks collaborates with educators to advance their schools’ strategic priorities and evolve their professional practice.
Over the course of 25 years, Jason has worked in schools in the United States, India, and the United Arab Emirates and has consulted with schools across five continents. He pairs his practice with a deep commitment to compassion, recognizing that each of us is at a different point in a unique personal and professional journey.
Jason works alongside teachers as they reflect on lessons through the lens of Universal Design for Learning, supports teams as they build their collaborative capacity through Adaptive Schools, and engages educators in coaching conversations as they plan processes and reflect on their practice.
