RIS Vivace and Brown University's Bear Necessities Shine in Performances and Charity Event
RIS Ruamrudee International School’s high school choir, Vivace, recently participated in two significant events that combined musical performance with community service, thanks to the efforts of RIS alumna Khun Ja Kanokewan Wuttithamrong (Class of 1987). Led by RIS music teacher Ms. Jenn Forsland and supported by Khun Ja’s dedication to connecting students with world-class performers, the choir joined forces with The Bear Necessities, Brown University’s TTBB (Tenor, Tenor, Baritone, Bass) a cappella group, for a memorable campus performance and workshop.
Campus Performance and Workshop
The Bear Necessities, established in 1992 and renowned for their harmonies and dynamic performances across the U.S. and internationally, conducted a workshop for RIS students in the late afternoon on January 15, 2025. The session focused on vocal techniques, a cappella arrangement, and performance skills, offering Vivace members an opportunity to refine their craft and build confidence. Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Jenn Forsland shared, “The informal and interactive nature of the workshops and performances that high school choir members shared with the Bears allowed for an easy, authentic connection and a memorable experience which inspired our students.”
Later that day, both groups presented Afternoon A Cappella at The Nest. The program included individual sets from each ensemble, featuring arrangements of classic pop songs and modern Thai hits, and concluded with two collaborative pieces. “The Bears modeled a beautiful example of what it looks like to continue pursuing music in balance with other passions and pathways,” Ms. Forsland noted. “One of their key messages for our students was that lifelong engagement with music, especially when shared with others, enriches our human experience by adding joy, beauty, and value.”
Community Impact Through “Voices for Change”
Vivace also participated in Voices for Change, a charity initiative held at CentralWorld on January 18-19. Organized by RIS alumna Khun Ja Kanokewan Wuttithamrong, the public event brought together vocal groups from schools across Bangkok to support the Community Children Foundation under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
Reflecting on the event, Khun Ja expressed her gratitude: “I am beyond words. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for your incredible support for Voices for Change. Each and every performance was special, unique, and heartfelt in its own way.” She shared inspiring moments of collaboration between groups and audience members, adding, “We not only met our fundraising goal of 720,000 baht but smashed it. The amount as of Sunday at 6 p.m. was 1,037,300 baht, and it continued to climb to a final total of 1,084,128 baht!”
Khun Ja’s efforts highlight the values of compassion and service deeply ingrained in the RIS community. “Using music as a vehicle to connect and uplift others, she continues to shine a positive light on our community,” Ms. Forsland remarked. “What a gift it is for RIS music students to be included in her vision and to witness the powerful and important work she is doing on a global scale.”
Participating students received Certificates of Recognition signed by CCF’s National Director, along with commemorative t-shirts, while schools involved were presented with Certificates of Appreciation. The funds raised will help provide education for children under CCF’s care, making a tangible difference in their lives.
Growth and Development
This season brought growth for Vivace, which welcomed several new members. Students focused on strengthening their skills and tackling the challenges of ensemble singing. Members highlighted the importance of communication and collaboration, with one noting, “It’s crucial to support each other as a choir.” Another shared, “I’m here to pursue my passion for music and explore performance opportunities.”
The collaboration with The Bear Necessities and participation in Voices for Change highlighted Vivace’s commitment to musical excellence and community engagement. RIS extends its gratitude to Ms. Jenn Forsland for her leadership and to Khun Ja Wuttithamrong for her support of music education and philanthropic initiatives.
