Reports to: Director of Student Support, High School Section Principals, and Learning Support Teacher

Position Overview

The Learning Support Instructional Assistant supports students with identified severe learning needs so that they can access the curriculum within the classroom setting. The role focuses on promoting participation, skill development, and independence. The IA works under the direction of the Learning Support teacher and collaborates with classroom teachers and the Student Support team.

This position operates across Tiers 1, 2, and 3 within the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Support

• Support student engagement during whole-class instruction.

• Break down tasks and clarify instructions based on teacher guidance.

• Assist with small-group instruction planned by the teacher.

• Support students in completing assigned work.

Implementation of Student Plans

• Apply the accommodations and modifications outlined in students’ IEPs.

• Support behavioral and sensory strategies as outlined by the team.

• Observe student performance and share relevant information with the Learning Support teacher.

Support for Student Independence

• Use prompting strategies and gradually reduce support over time.

• Support organization, task initiation, and task completion.

• Encourage self-advocacy and student ownership of learning.

Collaboration

• Work under the direction of the Learning Support teacher.

• Coordinate with classroom teachers to align support with lesson objectives.

• Participate in meetings and contribute relevant observations.

• Maintain clear and professional communication with staff.

Inclusive Practice

• Support students within the classroom as the primary learning environment.

• Facilitate participation in group activities and peer interactions.

• Contribute to a structured, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain the confidentiality of student information.

• Follow all safeguarding procedures and report any concerns.

• Participate in professional development.

• Implement feedback to improve professional practice.
  
  

Role Boundaries

• The IA supports instruction but does not lead the class.

• The IA does not design or plan lessons.

• The IA does not communicate directly with parents unless directed to do so.

• The IA works under the supervision and guidance of the Learning Support teacher.
